Like every year, in October, on Reunion Island, hiking is highlighted! The Western Tourist Office organizes the Hiking Festival , a flagship event in Reunion.

Jewel of Reunion Island, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Mafate cirque is only accessible on foot or by air. Its wild character once made it serve as a refuge for escaped slaves.

Today, it offers hikers a journey to the heart of the soul of the island, discovering spectacular landscapes, such as the Trois Roches Waterfall, and emblematic islets such as La Nouvelle and Marla.

The Mafate cirque: a hiking paradise on Reunion Island

The Mafate cirque, born from the collapse of the Piton des Neiges, extends over the Hauts de Saint-Paul and La Possession. It can be explored on foot, avoiding the rainy season in Reunion from November to April.

Its steep terrain makes it a favorite playground for hikers, with more than 140 km of trails. Starting with the GRR3, a complete loop starting from the Col des Bœufs, or the Grand Raid ultra-trail race which needs no introduction.

Along the way, they offer unique landscapes in the world, from steep ramparts to green peaks, passing through the Plaine aux Sables and impressive waterfalls like the Cascade Trois Roches.
